Review of the Month Winner - January 2018

January 03/01/18 Tim S. Charters Towers, QLD

Tim's Review of the Manfrotto Pro Light Reloader-55 Rolling Camera Case:

"Top quality roller"
"I travel a lot with my gear and I was tired of carrying all my gear in a backpack, so I needed a carry-on compatible rolling case. I had a look at some Lowepro and Think Tank cases, but this Manfrotto one looked the most heavy-duty and had the most padding. This is my first Manfrotto case and the quality is just as good as that of their tripods. Good choice.
At the moment, I have 2 bodies, 4 lenses, 2 flashes, and some other bits and pieces in the case with plenty of room to spare. There are lots of small pockets for your filters, cables, chargers, etc. The handle extends very easily and the wheels are very quiet. The zippers look tough but operate very smoothly. The laptop pocket is huge - my 13” MacBook Pro disappears in it. I wouldn’t mind more padding for this pocket, though. The tripod mount on the side is also a cool feature - it keeps your tripod out of the way if you want to open your bag. The TSA combination lock fooled me a bit: I had no idea what TSA was and I thought I didn’t get keys for the lock. Now I know that I am not supposed to have the key for the lock :-)"

December 05/12/17 Tomas W. Port Noarlunga, SA

Tomas' Review of the Lowepro Flipside Trek BP 350 AW Backpack:

"Decent with some flaws"
"The concept of reverse opening is excellent, especially if you would like to travel safe with your gear, and the application of this was done extremely well. I can fit a full frame mirrorless camera with a prime and 2 smaller zoom in the camera compartment comfortably. The main compartment is large enough to take some clothes and other bits.
After a few months of heavy use, I would recommend this backpack provided you don’t require large side pockets that are easy to access while walking. The large exterior front pocket is simply too small for anything that is not flat. The pocket would have been perfect for an iPad if it had been only a few centimetres deeper and wider. The waist belt is quite substantial and it does help to shift the weight of the bag from my shoulders to my waist so long walks are not a problem with this bag, even when fully loaded. I don’t really like the tripod mount on the side of the bag - it feels a bit loopsided and the pocket on the side for the tripod feet is simply too small to carry a full size tripod. The materials, zippers, and padding are as good as you can expect from a Lowepro bag."

Review of the Month Winner - November 2017

November 04/11/17 Ozcan B. Emerald, QLD

Ozcan's Review of the Panasonic DMC-TZ110 Digital Camera:

"Excellent travel camera"
"I wanted a small travel camera with decent zoom and better image quality, and narrowed my choices down to the TZ110. I also considered other models like the TZ90, FZ300, LX10 or the Sony RX100 III, but they either have a smaller sensor with more zoom, or the same sensor with less zoom (but with a faster lens, though). It was a good decision as I returned from my holiday with a lot of great photos. I was particularly impressed by the quality of sunset photos taken with the TZ110. I also love having a viewfinder. It is quite small but very useful in bright light, and it has eye detection that switches the LCD on or off. The 4K photo mode is also a great feature, but I don’t find myself using it too often. Negatives? I wouldn’t mind longer battery life and weather sealing for a travel camera. 4 stars."

Review of the Month Winner - October 2017

October 07/10/17 Jacqueline B. Port Augusta, SA

Jacqueline's Review of the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G85 Zoom Kit with 14-140mm Lens:

"Very capable 4K video camera"
"I purchased this G85 as an upgrade to my Canon 750D. I loved my Canon for stills and video, but I needed 4K. I went for the G85 instead of the G7 because of the IBIS and weather sealing, and it was a great decision. This camera is the perfect size for my hands, has excellent ergonomics and it's a pleasure to shoot with. It is very quick to start up, and the AF is incredible fast with all my lenses and is always spot on. It has a lot of features that I will need to learn to use, but I will have this camera for a long time, for sure. The only thing I am not completely happy with is the battery life, which is much worse than that of my 750D, but I know this is the same with any mirorrless camera. I'm looking into using a Metabones adapter so that I could use my existing Canon lenses with the G85 as I have found myself not using my Canon body since I got this Panasonic."

Review of the Month Winner - September 2017

September 02/09/17 Chris M. Heathmont, VIC

Chris' Review of the Lowepro ProTactic 450 AW Camera Backpack:

"Lowepro ProTactic 450 AW Camera Backpack"
"I’m a keen sports photographer and recently had the opportunity to get a second Canon EOS7D. I was looking for another backpack, one that could cater for two cameras with lenses attached for quick switching during/after a match. My Lowepro Fastpack 350 had served me well but didn’t have enough room for the second body/lens combo to be secured with good padding. This new backpack does everything I need it to. It holds one EOS7D with a 24-105 attached in the top, and the side door down below has enough room for the EOS7D MKII with a 100-400 attached. There’s plenty of room left over for my other bits and pieces such as flash unit, lens filters etc. It’s very customisable – I took out 7 dividers before I settled on the layout I wanted. The extra drink bottle holder, pouch and tripod holder plus straps can be placed in various locations due to the webbing across the pack. It’s very comfortable when loaded up to about 9KG and has served me well so far. The rain cover that pulls out from the base will keep things dry on the wetter days of the footy season. Highly recommended."

Review of the Month Winner - August 2017

August 05/08/17 Robert M. Baulkham Hills, NSW

Robert's Review of the GoPro Karma Grip

"GoPro Karma Grip"
"I operate a business which provides forensic examination and cause & origin reports on fire damaged vehicles, plant and equipment to insurance companies and law enforcement bodies. I use a variety of cameras in this work, including a GoPro Hero 4. When I start an examination, I normally walk around the vehicle, making notes about key observations. I felt I could improve this, by using the Hero 4. As every report I do has the potential to lead to a Court hearing, I wanted the best possible video of these initial observations. So, I brought a Karma Grip. The results are great. The first job I used the Karma Grip on was the examination of a wood chipping machine at Beaudesert, Queensland. This machine was operating on a hillside, which had fairly rough ground. Yet, the Karma Grip made my walk around video smooth and very professional looking. I would certainly recommend the Karma Grip."

Review of the Month Winner - July 2017

July 01/07/17 Scott R. Castlecrag, NSW

Scott's Review of the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G85 Weatherproof Kit

"Why you should buy this over the Sony A6300 or the Canon 80D"
"Having done months of research as to which 4k camera I should buy for video, I narrowed down to the Panasonic G85. A month on and I am so happy I selected this camera for several reasons. First and foremost is price. This camera, two lenses, a tripod and Zoom H1 all cost me $2000 from Cambuy which represents excellent value. The Canon and Sony simply cannot compete in this area. The video quality of the camera is on par with the other two, and also features 5-axis image stabilisation - making hand held recording look stunning. It also has 5 programmable function buttons which make personalising the camera incredibly easy and enjoyable. The ergonomic design and fantastic build quality give you confidence to take this camera anywhere. I also love the fully articulating touch screen which makes vlogging and touch to focus possible. Overall I highly recommend this camera, and can also vouch that Cambuy offer the most competitive prices for it in Australia."

Review of the Month Winner - June 2017

June 03/06/17 Rob F. Strathalbyn, SA

Rob's Review of the Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm f2.8 PRO Lens with MC-14 1.4x Teleconverter

"Zuiko digital ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO lens to “die for”
I’ve shot Canon for quite a few years, and always thought the cameras and lenses were pretty special. Late last year I decided that the gear weight and bulk was getting to be intrusive in any of my trips (long and short), and started to take note of some of the Olympus macro images that were being posted.
Their quality was enough to cause me to invest in an Olympus PEN-F and an E-M1 Mk1. First lens was the 60mm macro, then a 12-150, followed by 7-14 f/2.8 PRO and 12-40 f/2.8 PRO. But I was also lusting after a 40-150 f/2.8 PRO! I jumped in the deep end and purchased the lens when it was offered with a 1.4 converter thrown in - FF equivalent was then 420mm. Not as long as my Tamron 150-600, but wow! - the focus speed, and definition is outstanding. I shot my grandson’s soccer match without the 1.4 as this made the combo a bit long, however the ability to focus at a moment’s notice was great. Many keepers from that session! Then 2 days ago, I shot my first video of a presentation to a meeting in fairly low light conditions. Shot at f/3.5 to help the DOF a bit, and ISO 1600. I was about 10 meters from the presenter, and could zoom in to a head and shoulders, easily resolving all the facial hair and wrinkles. This lens is going to see a lot of work! Build quality is top notch, and the sliding lens hood really finished it off. I never shoot without one.
My final advice is…. if you are shooting Micro 4/3 - you need one of these beauties!"

Review of the Month Winner - May 2017

May 06/05/17 Haydn W. Surry Hills, NSW

Haydn's Review of the Lowepro Slingshot Edge 250 AW Sling Bag

"Having been the owner of a Lowepro Slingshot 102 and 202 sling bag for quite a number of years, naturally I was excited to see that there was an update to the design.

The original bags are tough and survived many an overseas trip and the new Edge looks just as sturdy if not tougher. This will be my new go to carry-on for flights as the larger top section is big enough to hold a pair of headphones plus a light sweatshirt... not to mention the great edition of a tablet pouch.

Despite seeming to fit more in, the profile of the bag is actually slimmer than the old one. It's slightly wider but I don't mind as I always felt the old design was too narrow anyways. This bag is perfect for mirrorless owners as you will easily fit two bodies plus a couple of lenses with out a problem. This thing is like the Tardis!

Another great but small addition is the elasticised drink pouch on the side. I don't know about you, but I like to carry around a bottle of water with me when I'm shooting. There's nothing worse when you have to put a drink/water bottle inside your camera bag with your gear so this outside pocket is a real blessing.

I would definitely recommend this bag to anyone wanting a stylish, comfortable, go anywhere camera bag."
