Nikon Introduces New Premium Compact DL Series and Four New Additions to the 2016 COOLPIX Range

Posted by Gary Jenei on

Nikon Australia is pleased to announce the launch of the new Nikon DL series, a new line-up of premium compact cameras incorporating high-performance NIKKOR lenses, Nikon’s unique SnapBridge low-energy Bluetooth connectivity and a suite of features to complement any advanced enthusiast or professional’s kit.

Nikon DL Premium Compact Cameras

The series comprises of three new models, the DL18-50mm f/1.8-2.8, DL24-85mm f/1.8-2.8, and the DL24-500mm f/2.8-5.6, each equipped with different NIKKOR lens groups and crafted for different photography styles. The Nikon DL series is the first range of compact cameras in the industry to feature an advanced Hybrid AF system, combining both phase-detection AF and contrast-detect AF.

The cameras also support Nikon’s newest connectivity platform, SnapBridge, for the seamless and immediate transfer of images to paired smart devices via Bluetooth low energy. Professional photographers can now upload and share their favourite images and on-going project updates as soon as they are captured, whether shooting in the field or in the studio.

The DL18-50mm f/1.8-2.8: Big Pictures, Unlimited Possibilities

The DL18-50mm f/1.8-2.8 presents itself with a focal range of 18-50mm and top of its game leading optical innovation. Among its stellar lens characteristics is the combination of its 18mm focal length with a wide aperture of f/1.8, offering photographers the fastest maximum aperture in NIKKOR history, surpassing that of NIKKOR interchangeable lenses for SLR cameras. In addition, the DL18-50mm f/1.8-2.8 is the only compact camera in the range to incorporate a Nano Crystal Coat, reducing the unwanted effects of ghosting and flare, reducing the need for post-processing. Other superior optical technologies adapted from Nikon DSLRs include a large-diameter, precision moulded-glass aspherical lens element with a large thickness deviation ratio, an aspherical Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element, and a High Refractive Index (HRI) lens element, working together to suppress all types of aberrations.

DL18-50mm f/1.8-2.8 Key Features:

  • True-to-life wide angle capture, perfect for the photography of architecture and landscapes
  • 1.0-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor
  • Brand-new quad-core EXPEED 6A image-processing engine

The DL24-85mm f/1.8-2.8: Ready for Close-ups

The DL24-85mm f/1.8-2.8 with its f/1.8-2.8 aperture and 24-85mm focal range, incorporates a lens design that creates well-blended background blur at short shooting distances, making this DL the portraiture specialist. This is achieved through a lens architecture that incorporates ED glass, precision moulded-glass aspherical lens and HRI lens elements, working together to enable superior rendering and suppressing unwanted lens aberration effectively. Unique to this camera’s lens design is the incorporation of a built-in ND filter, enabling the use of slower shutter speeds even when shooting in brightly lit environments. This reduces the amount of light to 1/8 (3-stop equivalent), preventing the over-exposure of images.

DL24-85mm f/1.8-2.8 Key Features:

  • Option to shoot with a super macro function, enabling “life-size” close-up shooting at a 35mm-format equivalent
  • 1.0-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor
